Helen and I went to an opening at the Ted Rope gallery in Dargaville and ended up at the Funky Fish for dinner (which I can recommend). We then took a drive down onto this awesome beach, apparently part of the longest drivable beach in New Zealand - Ripiro Ocean Beach, about 100kms long. I've never before seen a beach as vast as this, both in length and width. We found some pens in the car and scraps of paper and we both made drawings. Then we drove the winding road home and later I painted this from that scrappy drawing and the lasting impression Baylys Beach left on me.

The sketch from the car.
