I've always loved seeing artist's sketch books, especially da Vinci's, and the little sketchy paintings that come before the final piece. That material shows so much of the artist's thinking that you can often tell more about the artist from it than from the finished artwork. I was inspired to paint what I love, so I thought hey, why not include all that stuff IN the finished painting? So I did.
