The second of a series of 5 paintings of Lion Rock from this perspective.This is my largest painting to date. Lion Rock deserves a much larger canvas than this to do it justice, but I'll have to work up to that.
If you've gone to Piha and stood at the base of Lion Rock you'll know why I wanted to paint this scene. Totally awe-inspiring. It may not be the biggest rock in the world but it has the spirit of a mountain. Walking down the stream towards it's wide base is like being ushered into the presence of a mighty king. Apparently it's the plug from a volcano. Imagine that dropping out of the sky onto the beach! Shmokey Jim!
