The first of a series of 5 paintings of Lion Rock from this perspective. This one was done as a study piece for the much larger and more demanding piece which covers 1 square metre - my largest painting yet.
If you've gone to Piha and stood at the base of Lion Rock you'll know why I wanted to paint this scene. Totally awe-inspiring. It may not be the biggest rock in the world but it has the spirit of a mountain. Walking down the stream towards it's wide base is like being ushered into the presence of a mighty king. Apparently it's the plug from a volcano. Imagine that dropping out of the sky onto the beach! Shmokey Jim!
