This is the fourth and probably final painting I will make of Teal Bay from this vantage point. The previous painting was the larger "Evening, Teal Bay", which had unified the concepts of the first two paintings on a grander scale. This painting came after long contemplation over "Evening, Teal Bay", which created a desire in me to tone down the color saturation and release a more passionate style onto the canvas.
My wife Helen asked me what it felt like to have this urgent need to get this painting out of me. I remember saying it's like an explosion in space, where there's no sound, and to fulfill itself the sound has to come out - the painting is the sound of the explosion inside me.
