This is the same canoe as in ' Evening Light ' although this painting was made from the photos I took in the morning after the storm. This is how I found it, just lying there settled into the sand with that beautifully ragged rope so stark against the hull. The little poem I wrote to go with it on the back was just an afterthought to support the text on the canvas but I like it because it speaks quietly about life and death. I had fun building the texture with a palette knife and glazing over it later to achieve that stained look. This is the most subdued palette I've ever used in a painting and I'm really pleased with the sophistication it seems to have given it. It seems to me to be another leap ahead, and I'm looking forward to what comes next.
