There's nothing quite so visually powerful in nature as a brightly sunlit scene cast against a dark background. The old masters new this well as is evident in the proliferation of dark mysterious backgrounds in their work. Look at any Rembrant painting to see an example of this. That is one of the governing ideas behind this painting. What came first though was the desire to capture the power and beauty of the evening sunlight on this scene. In order to emaphsise this I added the approaching storm. It's based on photographs and sketches taken from Uretiti Beach in Bream Bay, just a 5 minute canter up the beach from our home.
