Whale Bay is well known to many Northlanders. This painting is a comissioned piece for a woman who's daughter was married on this beautiful beach. I've included some subtle clues in the painting which talk about the wedding there. Two sets of footsteps can be seen making their way down the beach to the corner where they were married. Two Nikau palms stand close together to mark the spot. On the right hand side of the painting in the background the two Nikaus are echoed again, representing the parents. On the Pohutukawa branch in the foreground there are two blossums, and in the distant sky two birds are flying together. The wedding day was one of those lucky days where the stormy weather cleared just in time for the ceremony and so I've also painted receding storm clouds on the horizon.
