The idea for this painting sprung from a discussion with Wellington artist Richard Ponder in which he encouraged me to follow my heart in my painting. I've always enjoyed paintings in which some parts are left seemingly unfinished, contrasted with tight detail in the focal point. On a professional level it's always interesting for me to see an artist's underpainting which gives me clues as to how the painting was developed. From a purely aesthetic viewpoint, I love to see the extremes of what paint can do in a single painting - loose and seemingly uncontrolled in one area and expertly channeled into realism in another. The concept is reminiscent of Michelangelo's unfinished "Slave" sculptures, whose figures struggle to free them selves from the roughhewn marble. I was inspired to try using this "unfinished" technique in a painting that's theme was that of a journey of discovery, both in the journey with the horse (a friend), and my own artistic journey.
