A select few of my favourite paintings have been made into Limited Edition Giclee (JheeClay) prints on canvas. Giclee printing uses the latest inkjet printing technology to create images which are practically indistinguishable from the original artwork. Look as close as you like and you won't be able to tell the difference. The detail is so compelling that art museums like the Louvre in Paris frequently use giclee prints of there originals to display to the public in place of paintings which are being cleaned or restored.
It takes me about 2 days to scan the original painting piece by piece and rebuild the image on my computer, colour adjusting to ensure the final print will be indistinguishable from the original. I've used computers for over 15 years and have trained and worked as a graphic designer - that's how I've gained the knowledge to be able to do this. Most artists have their work photographed, the transparency film scanned, and then printed. This creates a somewhat blurry print - the fine brushwork detail is lost. Because I scan my paintings directly their is no loss of detail. The print is as crisp as the original and you have to touch the brushstrokes to discover that there's actually no lump there.
The finest materials are used in the printing process ensuring that the finished giclee will not show any signs of fading for up to 100 years (unless hung in direct sunlight). When finished they are also coated with a UV protective varnish giving a fine satin finish. Each giclee is hand-stretched by me and signed and numbered on the reverse. Unstretched prints are delivered in a tube and can be framed or stretched as you wish.
Click on the images for a closer view and more information about the originals. All prices are in NZD but when you "Buy Now" the currency will be converted to your own currency if different from NZD. |

| Matapouri Beach in Northland, New Zealand was the inspiration for this piece. Its a working through of the style concept I mentioned earlier - allowing loose brushwork to be made real by the finer detail in the painting. |

This is my son Luke headed down to the beach. He's 2 - doesn't mind telling you either. Such an inspiring age for him where everything's new and exciting - nice to try and capture some of that adventure in a painting. |

| Ruakaka Beach, Bream Bay, Northland, New Zealand with Mount Manaia in the background.
I was inspired by my studies of the local sand dunes to paint this larger image of Ruakaka Beach. The top of the dunes seemed to leave a space in the foreground of the composition which needed to be filled so I transplanted my "After the Storm" canoe from previous works to complete the scene. |

| Pataua in Northland, New Zealand is a very special place. If you've been there you know what I mean. There's something about the landscape there. Maybe it's the contrast between the serene estuary and the roaring surf beach, or its small community divided by the estuary, tenuously united by its wooden footbridge. Whatever it is, I always feel like I've arrived somewhere unique and special when I drive down out of the bush into Pataua. |

| Sandy Bay in Tutukaka, Northland, is one of the most beautiful and inviting beaches along the Tutukaka coast, which is a treasure trove of secluded white sand beaches. Sandies is also a great spot for surfing, and on a big day the break can be ridden halfway across the whole bay. On calmer days it's a mecca for families and kids of all ages, this more sheltered southern end providing safe swimming and great boogy-boarding waves for the littluns. |

| A montage of images very dear to me. They include (from left) flying in over the Whangarei Heads, a Koru Fern, Sandy Bay in Tutukaka, the view over Bream Bay from the top of the Brynderwyn Range and the 3 inserts are Mt Manaia from One Tree Point, Bream Bay, and Ruakaka Beach. The poetry is my own except for the piece top left which I from a good friend. |

| The view from the top of the Brynderwyns heading north at Bream Bay, Northland, New Zealand. A favourite view of many, which means they've made it home from a trip down south. Reminds me a lot of The Shire from The Lord of the Rings too. |

Time and tide have borne me here
But earth now takes my form
Far from my berth I wake to find
Such peace after the storm.
On an early morning jog down the beach I came across this old canoe washed up after a storm. This is how I found it, just lying there settled into the sand with that beautifully ragged rope so stark against the hull. The little poem I wrote to go with it was just an afterthought to support the text on the canvas but I like it because it speaks quietly about life and death. I had fun building the texture with a palette knife and glazing over it later to achieve that stained look. |
