Hi everyone,
It's been 11 weeks since the last newsletter. For me it's been a time of serious study. I've devoted the time to learning more about light by painting oil studies from life. I began with still lifes of fruit in the studio and later moved outside for landscapes and more demanding subjects. My studies culminated in a week long stay at Piha where I painted 5 pieces from the beach and clifftops. Taking this work, and hundreds of photos back to the studio I've so far painted 2 larger Piha works and am looking forward to several more before I make another field trip to gather more material. I've come to realise how invaluable painting from life really is when you're interested in the study of light. The first of the Piha paintings will be in an exhibition at Parua Bay Gallery from 21st Oct to 5th Nov. I'll be there at 1pm on Saturday 21st - hope to see you there. See the invitation below for more information.

I hope you enjoy my latest offerings. Click on them for more information.

Piha
13.10.06
Oil on Canvas
51 x 153cm
$6000
I've recently spent a week out at Piha where I completed 5 oil sketches and took hundreds of photos. From that material, back in the studio, I'm working on larger paintings which would have been impossible to paint on site. While painting the sketch which led to this painting a storm came in over the ocean and forced me to take shelter in a cave on the beach until it passed. Back up on the cliff amidst the swirling remains of the storm I was left with a clear feeling of the undeniable raw power which is Piha. Such a small name for such an awe-inspiring place.
Study painting

Apple Study
19.09.06
Oil on Canvas
45 x 62cm
$350
My first green apple study, complete with working notes down the side.

Pear and Apple Study
18.09.06
Oil on Canvas
31 x 31cm
$350
My second apple and pear study painted the day after the first, in exactly the same setup - determined to get it right. The pear took an hour to paint whereas the apple took 4 hours, perhaps because it was harder to see the subtle colour variations in the darker tones of the apple.

Pear Study
14.09.06
Oil on Canvas
38 x 38cm
$300
Painted in Brett a'Court's Waipu studio - an artist friend. The red cloth is a painting rag he'd lent me. Basic idea - red and green complementary colour scheme. Interesting to see how much the red is reflected into the pear's shadow side. Painted in cool south light -> cool light, warm shadows.

Piha Study 1
28.09.06
Oil on Canvas
46 x 36cm
$300

The first study from our Piha expedition. Painted under the shade of a Pohutukawa clinging to the rocky cliff end of South Beach. We had a few days of great weather and great surf, and then the weather turned grey and wet as I was hoping it would do. To me, Piha seems to suit the blustery grey weather with it's big surf and steep cliffs, whereas the more tranquil east coast beaches better suit the high blue skies of summer.

Thanks for your continued interest in my art.

Warmest Regards,

Richard
