Hi Everyone,
I hope you've had a great Christmas break and are looking forward to whatever this near year will bring. Hello to all the latest newsletter registrants and a big thankyou to all of you who've continued to show interest in my art. This newsletter's random prize draw goes to Amy Bridgeford! Congratulations Amy. Your prize is your choice of the painting on the right, or a voucher for 50% off a giclee print of your choice, or 50% off a commissioned painting of your choice. Sorry if you haven't won this time around, but to increase your chances of winning next time, click here to find out more about the prize points system.

PRIZE POINTS
I've made a change to the prize points system. You get a prize point by getting a friend to register for this newsletter. If you get over 5 points, I'll send you a free DVD worth $25!  If you get over 10 points I will send you a voucher for 33% off any artwork purchased through my gallery. If you get over 20 points I'll, well.., I don't know yet but it'll be good! You just go ahead and rack up 20 points and see what happens!!

COMMISSIONING A PAINTING
I'm putting together a page which explains how to go about commissioning a painting. I'm actually still working on the commission which I've used as an example in this new page, so it's a work in progress.
Have a look here: Commissioning a Painting.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS
I've been painting professionally for 6 years now working in pretty much the same way and I felt it was time for a change. The change has come about over the last 6 months, starting with the layering and da Vinci-like sketches in 'I Dream of Flying', continuing through my Sumner series and the freedom of expression in 'Peace'. After that I was sort of burnt out. I'd had three major exhibitions in a row. I didn't paint again for 4 weeks and entered a dark period. I felt as though I'd come to a dead end in the road I'd been travelling. So I took my time, worked on other projects and dwelled upon what I'd learned and what I hadn't learned. Thanks to the encouragement of my wife Helen, and a number of artists and friends including Brett A'Court and Chris Coffey I was able to pick up the brushes again, and found that I was suddenly inspired and set free into a new area of expression. To my surprise the culdesac opened out onto a highway which stretched to the horizon. Oh how poetic! But true. These 4 paintings below are just the beginning of something. I'm not sure what that something will be but it's exciting beyond words for me and I'm looking forward to seeing where it all leads. A friend recommended naming the year - to give it more purpose, so I'm calling this one 2008, Year of FUN!

Thanks for your continued interest in my art, and good luck with the next newsletter prize!

Piha

Oil on Canvas
76 x 76cm
$3500
I've always loved seeing artist's sketch books, especially da Vinci's, and the little sketchy paintings that come before the final piece. That material shows so much of the artist's thinking that you can often tell more about the artist from it than from the finished artwork. I was inspired to paint what I love, so I thought hey, why not include all that stuff IN the finished painting? So I did.

Oil on Canvas
101 x 101cm
$4500

Using the same idea as in 'Piha' above, I took elements from research in the Tutukaka area, inlcuded palette specifications for this painting and threw in a boat which I've used before and Shabang! there's a painting. Fun.

This one's really about placing elements in a painting in a pleasing way. Notes are about the miracle of the perfect design of a feather - how it works to enable flight amongst other things. The beach is Ruakaka reversed.

The quote is from Joanthan Livingstion Seagull. Again, just playing with elements in a pleasing way - having fun!
