Hi Everyone,
I hope that for you the Christmas Holidays has lived up to its name. We've had an eventful time, not really relaxing, but active and enjoyable with lots of family and friends, and KIDS! We went away camping for a week at Pataua South. Made me appreciate what I put my parents through when they took us camping. Great time though. Slowly getting back to the easel now. We've had a fantastic number of sales during these last 2 months which have also left me with 3 commissions to paint the new year in with. I guess the biggest success has been my latest painting "Evening's Rest" which sold within 3 hours of being exhibited at Haven Art Gallery in Waipu and has been so popular I've decided to make a limited edition giclee print of 150. Number 1 has sold already. Why is it that we spend more money in the summer months? Who knows. Money comes, money goes, so don't worry about it. That's my theory.

ART AUCTION: An Art Auction is scheduled for 2pm Saturday the 3rd of February at the Mangawhai Library Hall (Cnr Moir and Insley St). It's being organised by the Bream Bay Action Group to raise money for the legal battle against Mighty River Power's Coal Fired Marsden B Powerstation proposal which is now in the Environment Court. I'm one of over 30 artists donating work to this cause, so please show your support for this event, it should be a good one. It would be very helpful if you could just send this link on to people who you think might be interested: http://www.newzealandartist.com/auction

I hope you enjoy these latest paintings, click on them for more information.

When painting " Evening Light, Bream Bay ", I was inspired by my studies of the local sand dunes to paint this larger image of Ruakaka Beach. The top of the dunes seemed to leave a space in the foreground of the composition which needed to be filled so I transplanted my " After the Storm " canoe from previous works to complete the scene. The colourings of this work seem to leap back many months to my previous work with highly saturated colour schemes. After a long time concentrating on developing subtle harmonies in grays it's refreshing for me to do this again with my colours, although I've tempered the bold colours in the grasses and sky with larger areas of more neutral grays in the hope that the contrast between the two will enhance the pleasing qualities of both.

The sketch above was part of the investigative process of developing this painting. Although the final painting was too large to complete at the scene, the many sketches and photos taken of the area helped me to recreate the feeling of the place back in my studio, only a few hundred metres from this spot.

Lion Rock II
01.11.06
Oil on Canvas
101 x 101 cm
$4000
The second of a series of 5 paintings of Lion Rock from this perspective. This is my largest painting to date. Lion Rock deserves a much larger canvas than this to do it justice, but I'll have to work up to that.

If you've gone to Piha and stood at the base of Lion Rock you'll know why I wanted to paint this scene. Totally awe-inspiring. It may not be the biggest rock in the world but it has the spirit of a mountain. Walking down the stream towards it's wide base is like being ushered into the presence of a mighty king. Apparently it's the plug from a volcano. Imagine that dropping out of the sky onto the beach! Shmokey Jim! See other paintings of Lion Rock here.

Thanks for your continued interest in my art.

Warmest Regards, and all the best for this new year.

Richard
