Commissioning a painting means getting exactly what you want - gauranteed.
It doesn't cost any more than buying a painting off the wall.

Why get a commission?
When you've got something in mind already, but can't find the painting to match your idea.
To match colours in your room.
For a memory of a place.
For a gift.

The Process
You contact me with an idea for a painting.
We discuss size, shape, subject, colours, etc.
I email you some colour sketches for your consideration.
I make more sketches until you are happy.
I start work on the final painting, emailing you photos as it progresses.
I present you with the finished painting.

If you are unhappy with the finished painting you are not obligated to buy it.
(Thanks to all the preliminary consultations this has never happened.)

An Example Commission

A couple contacted me after browsing this website, asking if I could paint a picture for them about 60x130cm, with dune grasses in the front like several other paintings they named from my collection. They were specific in their colour choice, wanting more reds and browns than greens in the dune grasses to compliment a red feature wall in their lounge. The next day I emailed them the image below, saying 'here are 3 designs along with the photos they were sourced from - let me know if any of these tickle your fancy, with any suggestions for change.' I also gave them a list of different sizes and their prices.

They wrote back the next morning saying they both liked number 3, but asked if I could try putting a boat in the dunes somehow. So I sent them the image below, which I made from merging several photos, the same day.

'Great', they said, but can you make the boat less prominent and make the central dune more like the one in "Evening Light, Bream Bay'? 'No Problem' I said, and emailed them the next image.

At this point they were very happy, just requesting a few other minor changes - more light on the central dune and less grass in the foreground. The canvas was already prepared so I started that day on the final painting. As the painting progressed I sent them the following photos...

The Finished Painting

They were very happy and emailed me this:

"We wanted to say thanks again for the amazing painting you have created for us. It looks just fantastic in our lounge and provides us with a sense of calm. My sister describes it well when she says "the painting calms your soul". Originally we were unsure about the concept of commissioning a painting rather than purchasing an existing one, however you did a great job keeping us informed throughout the whole process and the progressive shots we received provided us comfort you were producing exactly what we wanted. Its awesome having the DVD also - still amazes us how the painting comes to life. You truly have a very special artistic talent and we would be happy to be a referral for anyone considering commissioning a painting."

Note: The DVD they mentioned is a gift I sometimes include with commissions of a timelapse video of the painting being created.

Commissioning a painting is really a fun and exciting process for both of us and it's nice for me to get to know who my painting is going to. Laybuy payment terms are also available so you can spread out the payments over one year or less. For instance, a $3000 painting spread over a year is just $58 a week. If you would like to commission me to do a painting just have a good look at the paintings on this website, figure out what you want and give me a call or an email. I look forward to hearing from you.
